UU 2.6.8 - One cause of crash - web server not up

Postby AnthonyB » Sun Oct 26, 2008 6:40 pm

I've just accidently found one cause of UU crashing - my webserver with Uniadmin/Roster was off and every time I started UniUploader 2.6.8 it would crash within about 10 sec.

As soon as I turned the web server back on it was fine.
Roster 2.0.2 svn [latest] latest trunk SVN svn [latest] running on IIS7/Windows Server 2008 SP2 | MySQL 5.0.85 | PHP 5.2.10 | Yes, Roster and PHP rocks on IIS! Even run as FastCGI extension!

Its the same if your computer doesn't have internet access, if the UU can't connect to the internet it will crash too. Due to it trying to find the URL but failing, and thus crashing.

I think maybe an offline mode or error check may be required. I'll try and look into it over the next few days when I get time, less someone else has done it sooner.

Sorry, I may not have been clear in my original post but that's exactly the point I was making. There's no clean error handling of the UA or upload webservers being uncontactable.

Any idea on when this might be fixed? I did not see this issue in earlier releases...right?

Thanks

Was already known on my side : having kids running around your desk unplugging all the RJ45 cables from the main switch one by one will make UU upset :?
Btw, not only UU.

UU 2.6.8 - One cause of crash - web server not up

Was about to report this very same issue.. oh well nm lol

FYI it's really annoying when your on mobile broadband as the connection isn't automatic when windows starts so UU always crashes on startup for me and I have to reload it.

UU 2.6.8 - One cause of crash - web server not up

Is there any kind of ETA on a fix for this. It's causing me some real headaches with people saying it keeps crashing so they won't run it.

It's true that UU goes down when your network card goes down.
This normally never happens, and should be avoided anyway because it also does nasty things with your connection to Blizzard's servers (do the same people say that they won't play WoW anymore because the connection goes down ? No ! - very strange in fact).

One thing rests : Wifi connections - they can get down on a logical way - dont-net won't like it neither => Boum.
If you really can't live without it, then bad luck - get the version before.

Point is : this should be connected en merits a patch or update just for this issue.

If UU (a very small program, but its uses dot net, a huge MS library) goes down then a small box shows up.
I never see it, because I'm not using the dafault WoW Video mode : I use the full-windows mode that permits me to play without being interfered - by ANY popup, even the Windows menu bar works without reducing the WoW screen .... One should really try this mode - no back draws, only advantages – and needed anyway if you have a multiple screen setup – as many have anyway.
Worst case scenario : UU goes down : the user should restart it (one click) -- wait couple of seconds (if they use addon sync) - click on upload (wait a couple of seconds) - and quit it. Yeah. We’re so sorry for them……

I know this is way to much for many people, asking a couple of seconds several times in a week.
Knowing that there are some people here, maybe many in fact, that spends thousands, if not more, of hours to build all these tools 'for the community'.

hades200082, please don't see this post as a direct reply to you;
I understand that it is difficult with these issues in place to 'sell' UU to your Guild members if they see something that they don't like. These same members probably don’t understand what you are to bring to them the with WoWRoster, they don’t give a sh*t about the Armory (they couldn't even find it) – they don’t understand why they should update their addons (although, they all use Windows, so they could have an idea...) – they just use WoW as a YAMC.

Note that UU isn't really "needed" for any game style : all can be done by hand.
If you have members that think that "they should not cooperate with YOUR Guild rules, then, well, it's time they searched a new Guild.
None is about Guild Rules.

Please, make your way of thinking more positive and even forget this message, just get the point. It just doesn't deserves your ‘headaches’

A quick note to tuigii....

I don't at all take it personally. I was simply pointing out, as a software developer myself, that any application should have error checking built in. No networked application should ever just crash out because the network is not available... it should handle the error gracefully by either silently failing, or displaying some notification (or small icon in a status bar) to indicate that it is not connected.

Then it should sit there and wait for a connection.

You also raise another point about guilds and guild rules. I completely disagree with your points there regarding members finding other guilds etc. We are not a raiding guild.. we are a casual friendly guild that happens to use a website to coordinate things. We have 127 members at last count and it can be difficult in-game.

We do raid weekly, but we do not impose silly elitist rules. We have fun and enjoy the game regardless of wipes etc.

We do not allow many pug members due to the abundance of the elitist-jerk attitude you demonstrated in your post and that is a sad truth.

Hi Hades200082,

No, nothing personal ;-)

Note that I'm not developing UniUpLoader.

About the treatment of co-members : I'll tell you a secret : I or any members of my guild never removed a member from your Guild for reasons I mentioned.
First of all : the guild name: Papy team (5 years old now) should give an indication for that.
Next : Our Guild rules are written in French and its rather a lot to translate, but I do not think we have special rules about what Guildies should do, and what they don't.
Updating their char in the roster is a question asked, thought. And having the according addons, also.

Before applying the "hard procedure", we help our members first.

This means of course that we all are just finished Naxx 25 - Malygos starts to worry about us, and our first tries at Uldar are conclusive (we all die ^^).
So, we're not really an VHL Guild.
Our ground rule : we go ahead together - no-one stays behind.

True is, - and I speak for myself - if I detected that a member tries to solo play in a group because rules aren't important to him (her) then I tell him so.

Many times, updating a char in WoWRoster is compared with rocket science procedures - and we all know that it isn't true.
99 % of all times, when it works out, a members says : "Oh, is that all ?" because as always, people run away for unknown issues.

Don't worry: "elitist-jerk attitude" isn't one of my characteristics. I wouldn't be member of a Guild then (I'm not the GM ^^).

Back to my work at the moment : preparing a 30+ Guild IRL meeting for next weekend :P
