"Who's Online" (aka who's playing wow now) feature

Postby imagineer » Thu Nov 02, 2006 4:51 am

Hi guys,

I emailed Matt who told me to post on the forum. He said he liked the idea.

Feature:
Add a new option to UniUploader to send a request to the update.php script whenever WoW is launched, and whenever it detects it is not launched (ie when the user shuts it down).

Then on the WoWRoster side it will have the ability to show a green icon or a nice WoW icon or have the TR background green to show that the user is online.

Basically, a "Who's Playing WoW Now" or "Who's Online" feature using a combination of UniUploader and WoWRoster.

It won't be 100% "who's online" accurate because the user could be on one realm and show online for another realm, but it will be 100% accurate for "Who's Playing WoW" now. Unless there's a way to detect which realm their in.

Either way, at the very minimum I'd like to see a feature like that to show on my WoWRoster site who has WoW loaded.

Thanks,
Imagineer

I think this would be a neat and easily implemented feature for both UU and roster. Kind of like giving each roster its own miniature wow only xfire system.

Except people will screw it up. They'll close UU before it signals "offline" or something else to make the "offline" signal fail. What this would require is something to time people out. But after how long? Because if someone is legitimately online it will only flag the site when they join. It won't continually say, "I'm still here." And people can play for HOURS at a time. So how long before it times out is a hard one. Make it too short, it'll cut off people who are still playing. Make it too long, and it's pointless. Maybe the guy closed WoW 4 hours ago and it still shows him online.

Anyway, it sounds neat, but I think that data inaccuracy will be the biggest concern.

The only way you could solve that is if you had UU CONTINUALLY sending an update saying, "yep, he's still online." And if the site doesn't receive that update after a few minutes, it marks him offline.

UU can monitor whether WoW is open, and ping the WowRoster script every 10 minutes. Should the next 10 minutes not receive a ping, then it times them out.

So the inaccuracy only survives for 10 minutes.

I'd say have this every 30 minutes, not 10

But then again matt, I thought you didn't want to tie UU to WoWRoster

exactly, and the thing about user closing uu, i can have uu do one last update to the monitor url before actually killing the program.

there would have to be 3 indicators for the status of a character, unknown (ping not received in last x mins), offline (uu updating, wow not running), online (uu updating, wow running).

THE ONLY method of identification of who is online/offline will have to be username only, aka. whatever is in the addvar1 field in UU.

The reason UU can't identify which char or server is because thats locked inside of wow and theres no way to get that info.

remember that this is only useful for stuff like identifying which user is online, and cant identify which character(s) are online.

so wowroster needs a field that can identify the login account name per user? basically if a guy has a main an 3 alts, then all 4 accounts will show a wow icon. this should be OK

This will be possible in Roster 1.8 where we'll be adding user auth

I don't think roster is mature enough for something like this, so I'll wait until 1.8
