Automatic CharacterProfiler.lua upload

Postby Potpie » Tue Apr 10, 2007 3:22 am

I posted something that I thought it was cool and might be useful or helpful.

Removed because it was deemed not helpful at all and was belittled by those who are obviously much more Leet than I am.

Automatic CharacterProfiler.lua upload

Postby Vanterax » Tue Apr 10, 2007 9:43 am

many in my guild are reluctant to run another exe

Yet your solution is to get curl.exe (didn't you just say they're reluctant to run another exe?) from a site called haxx.

I don't know, but that will fly even less with my guild.

So you are gonna download another exe.. so that you do not have to download an exe?

This seems... rather odd.. despite the fact that the tool will work.. the logic is somewhat.. strange..

If you are trying to avoid downloading addons then you need to discuss the system and the reasoning for the addons with your guild/website people..

For what it is worth, the paranoid will not use CURL either, they will simply not upload or manually upload via the web interface..

For the target "set it and forget it" majority of wow players... this will never be a reasonable alternative to uniuploader

You would point them at the site to get it themselves? No wonder it won't fly - you're not taking care of them.

They get a package from me - a batch file that is fully commented: they need only edit in their WoW path to SV; and the curl.exe command line utility.

Both are dropped in the WoW root folder - then either launch the game with the batch file, or comment out the wow.exe call and set up a Scheduled Task.

how is that different than them getting my version of uniuploader that is preconfigured with nothing for them to do but download and install. they don't have to edit anything. they don't configure a single thing.

no the bottom line is that people are either paranoid or lazy. no two ways about it.

Potpie wrote:LOL @ you guys. So skeptical -- did you even spend any time at all reading about Curl, or are you just poo-pooing it off the cuff?

It is a shame when people discount & criticize something without doing their homework.

Curl is something that is open source and respected in the Linux-head community, that has been around for a loooong time.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/curl/

All the source code is right there - precompiled, binaries, etc.

Every single one of my people who won't use UniUploader absolutely love Curl & using the batch file method.

I've increased my regular uploaders by over 300%.

They can see all the nuts and bolts and that makes them comfortable.

Curl has been around forever in the *nix world I'm told -- I guess that's lost on most -- perhaps it was a mistake to share this method here & the simple elegance of uploading with curl is lost on this readership.

The problem is that CURL is still running another EXE from a third party source, and this is offered up as the solution for people who... dont want to run an exe from a third party source?

It doesn't matter *how* old CURL is, since the windows binary is still just that.. a windows binary compiled by someone on the other side of the net..

OR your paranoid users are compiling it themselves (unlikely in the extreme) and editing the batchfile etc.. in which case.. it would be far easier for all parties concerned to simply use http://myrostersite.net/roster/update.php rather than download curl.exe and ezmode.bat and manually place them in the wow folder.

UU should be open source, but even if it was .. the fact of the matter is that people would still be using generic binary images from this site rather than compiling it themselves for distribution or use.

So we are right back to the initial problem/proposition.. curl.exe vs uniuploader.exe unix history is meaningless since we are talking about a windows binary here.. I can compile whatever I want and call it curl.exe.. its still an untrusted binary until/unless either *I* or some authority I trust have verified that it does what it claims to do without harming my system.

I happen to know of curl, and actually do use it for various things.. that doesn't make it the write tool or even an appropriate tool for distribution to a guild..

The way you get 100% use of UU, is you enforce it as a condition of guild membership.. (updates/up to date mods)

Options are a good thing to be sure (hence the reason for the manual update, uniuploader, juniuploader options already avail for roster) but this option in particular just seems to have no point whatsoever.. given that there are 2 better automatic tools, and 1 manual tool (which i might add actually does fix the paranoia problem.. except when you have people who just do not want their info public)

And how do you know how I handle my guild? If you're so smart, let me ask you: What's my guild's name?

I bet you don't know. You prefer to attack me personally than address the points I and others brought up.

I use a preconfigured UU packaged with an installer that requires no intervention. Plus everyone gets a set of mandatory mods (also preconfigured) to raid without having to know how to install mods. And I always keep those mods updated so everyone always has a working version through WoW patches. Can you do that with curl? Hmmmm... You don't have to answer.

Correction. UU *is* open source. You can download the source code from this site.

Yah it is, so tell me again how one open source binary that requires a geek to set it up and manually editing batch files.. is better than the open source program that actually works out of the box for the task its designed for?

You keep dancing around the issues of why people do not upload using UU.. it sure as hell isn't because curl is a unix derivative, nor is it because its not open source..

Automatic CharacterProfiler.lua upload

Postby robojerk » Wed Apr 11, 2007 4:33 am

I think another way of getting people to upload is always a plus.

I think the jnlp file in JUU is probably the best way to get lazy people to upload IMO though. Nothing to download, just a link they click on while reading the guild forums. Still, some guild members will still be too lazy to even do that, but at least I can call them out on it and wear them down.

Me? I think you're talking to the wrong guy. I'm not the one pushing curl. I just pointed out that UU was open source.
