I am using the sort members addon, but this only shows a box which the user can then sort by typing in stuff, not the default settings for the page..

It's making dividers correctly in your main members list, if you sort by a column that uses dividers (like level, class, or guild rank).

SortMembers does not support dividers for technical reasons. Also, the version for roster 1.7.3 does not have a configurable default sort. This is a limitation I don't expect to fix unless 1.8 takes a very long time to get released. The version for 1.8 does have configurable default sorts (and a lot of other stuff) but it contains roster 1.8 code so I can't backport that version to 1.7.3.
