New Developer! Be Gentle.

I love WoWRoster, Nicely done and has tons of possibilities. :)

I'm wanting to get into making some WoWRoster Addons and also some WoW Addons, maybe share some information between the two, etc... I'll be honest, I'm not a programmer, but have done a little programming in the past, and like to think I learn quickly.

So, i've got 2 questions. :)

1) Is there an addon that needs to be worked on, updated, or created? Something that's not terribly scary to begin with? :)

2) I know there's an SDK, I haevn't looked at it yet. What IDE would be recommended? (Windows or Linux)

I saw a shopping addon that was for Roster 1.x that I was thinking about working on or creating if it wasn't too difficult. Would anyone reccomend that one?

Thanks! :)

I would pick something that interests you the most
It makes it easier to work on something you like

I personally use Zend Studio and Notepad++ for quick edits

Welcome! I remember seeing that shopping addon, it had good potential. But I'd have to agree with Zanix, it's best to build an addon you're interested in. It might be easiest to start with a basic addon, then expand on it as you go, adding features and functionality.

As for me, I'm using Vista and XAMPP for my server, and Dreamweaver/Wordpad for writing code. There are alot of IDE's out there now. Just find the one that works best for you. You can download several of them at source forge.

Again, welcome! If you have questions about anything, feel free to ask. We look forward to seeing what you can add to the best guild management system on the net!

Yeah, notepad++ is one of the best code editors I've ever used on windows.

Course, nowadays I use gvim if I'm on windows and need to edit something, but I'm hardly going to recommend that to a newbie.

I had some ambitions for addon writing, and didn't realize there was an SDK. I'd poked around in the raw Roster code but that's a steep learning curve to try to understand the architecture. So now I'm off to check out the SDK.

One addon I'd love to see is something to tell me what empty or poorly-utilized sockets I have. Even something that shows all socketed-gear guild-wide, with some kind of evaluation of socket usage (eg. green gems in blue gear being "bad"). I just got my JC to the point where she can make gems and I want to see what I and other guildies might need that I can get skillup points for.

Ok.

[Gente mode ON]

Look in Wiki : http://www.wowroster.net/MediaWiki/Roster:Addon - and look in the column on the right side : See the word/link SDK
