Forum notifications emailed with IP address, not domain name

Postby ScratchMonkey » Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:18 am

I'm set up to receive notifications of replies to my posts, and they have links using the site's IP address, not www.wowroster.net. That means I'm not automatically logged in if I follow the link, because Firefox doesn't recognize the URL as matching the wowroster.net login info.

We need a rdns setup for wowroster.net => 72.232.237.114 from what it looks like

wowroster.net - 72.232.237.114
Reverse DNS: 114.237.232.72.static.reverse.ltdomains.com.

should be

wowroster.net - 72.232.237.114
Reverse DNS: wowroster.net.

Ah yes, and that reverse DNS with IP address also looks like a dynamic address that some spam filters might dislike. I think more recent plugins for SpamAssassin will see the "static" and know it's not a home system though.

Zanix unfortanatally we will need to get a hold of our hosting provider and ask them to add the entry.

So this isn't something we can do with our dns server or our domain name provider

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_DNS_lookup

The owner of the IP addresses is responsible for providing reverse DNS. That's why it's your hosting provider, not your domain provider, that sets those records. Some providers are willing to delegate using the CNAME mechanism mentioned in the wiki article, but this is mainly useful if you've acquired a block of multiple addresses from your provider and you expect to change the records frequently.

My static IP at the office is through SpeakEasy and I just have to file a ticket to get a PTR record set up. They're pretty quick at that. (If I could get SpeakEasy at home, I would, and would gladly pay the premium over Comcrap.)
