Reliable Host for Roster?

Postby Samadhi » Wed Jan 31, 2007 1:43 pm

Hi, gang. Hope this isn't blatantly off-topic.

Up until this past weekend, I've run my Roster off of GoDaddy hosting without any real difficulty. Unfortunately, however, something has changed recently and neither I, nor GD support can seem to figure out what. As a result, my roster page takes *forever* to render, if it works at all.

http://www.undeadfish.com/UFRoster/index.php

Can anybody suggest a solid, reliable, not-astronomically-expensive alternative? Moving my site will be a colossal pain, but having things just not work is worse...

Thanks,

Reliable Host for Roster?

Are you sure it's the hosting provider?

If you wanna get in touch with me, I can set you up on my hosting if you want to test it on another server before paying someone to get a host to move it to and hope it works...

I use startlogic (www.startlogic.com), and really like the customer service, as well as the price.

They have everything needed for roster to run, and to run well.

Reliable Host for Roster?

Postby Harshmage » Wed Jan 31, 2007 2:05 pm

I was once with GoDaddy. They offer a LOT in terms of storage and bandwidth. But they also lack the system requirements for a number of my site needs.
MySQL is one of them.
They actively refused any request I made to upgrade to MySQL 4.1 or higher. Therefore, I moved to LunarPages. They are actively making MySQL 5 bombardments to test how it will work on their system, and all of their hosting plans come with MySQL 4.1.

Edit: Oops, extra . between the www and lunarpages

shadowedweb.com is pretty good. No downtime and now I use them for both my business and my play sites.

Have had no downtime since I joined.

Reliable Host for Roster?

I realize I'm a bit late for the topic starter's purpose, but I still want to recommend http://www.domainnameshop.com/
Not the cheapest, but they have everything you want and then some more. Unlimited bandwith per month. Servers are in Norway, so perhaps not the best choice for people overseas, but a good alternative for Europeans :)

Reliable Host for Roster?

I hate to say this but I am a reseller for GoDaddy and had to switch since they can no longer support Wowroster.

I am very happy with my new roster provider http://www.nexcess.net the support is great and I am now hosting 3 guild rosters on their site.

Reliable Host for Roster?

Odd hearing all these complaints about GoDaddy. I haven't had any problems with them at all, running 2 e107 based sites and 1 instance of WowRoster. Guess I'm the oddity.

I ran with GoDaddy without trouble for more than 3 years. Even the roster ran trouble-free until recently, when it started giving me all sorts of problems. Unfortunately, their tech support repeatedly tried to blame the problem on me, repeatedly telling me that my databases were too big (10MB? I don't think so) rather than trying to fix the problem that was clearly at their end. Finally, after about a week of things being unavailable, I decided enough was enough.

I just wish I hadn't paid them for the full year in advance...

Yeah, I no longer pay that far in advance anymore, technologies change fast and if a script you like only works in the latest versions of PHP and mySQL and your host is reluctant to upgrade you need to decide what is more important.

Reliable Host for Roster?

Postby ScratchMonkey » Thu Mar 01, 2007 10:29 pm

I've been very happy with http://page-zone.com. You can see one of my rosters here, to check out performance:

http://sewingwitch.com/imajia/

A basic hosting account is $5/month. I'm using a reseller account just to get more control and more space and bandwidth.

The big selling point for me was access to ssh so I can go in and do more complicated setup than can be done with FTP and PHP. For instance, I use scp to copy the roster tarballs into place, then ssh in and "tar xvfz" them where I want them.

Been with Dreamhost for over 2 years. Their hosting packages are gigantic, and their support is very good and fast. They offer just about every hosting feature I've ever seen anyone ask for in a host.
