Blizzard's Repsonse to Rosters

Since Blizzard has designed a very professional looking roster / profile site, what will this do for WoWRoster?

The connection has timed out

The server at armory.worldofwarcraft.com is taking too long to respond.

it allows you to search for guilds/characters from all the blizzard servers at once in realtime.

i got it to pull up my main in a list, and another search revealed the guild i was looking for.

it's far from stable from the looks of it because i clicked my character expecting a profile, but a broken up web page with a search box.

I wish they would have just released a data gathering/retrieval mechanism in the client and let people dev their own stuff
though I get how they would want to get the arena stuff up

There's no way they can provide the flexibility and customization of the roster setup
but it sure makes the payoff a lot smaller.

Did blizzard give you guys any heads up on this?

Its interesting, When it wants to work, you can pull up the entire guild's roster like we can with WoW roster. And you don't have to upload profiles ect, You gota think that Blizzard is trying to bring the spotlight back to their site other than having people running WoW roster as it extremely popular and they want to chip in.

Its also on the main newspage at worldofwarcraft.com

Just pray for an XML feed and I'm sure the wowroster team can do some kick butt stuff.

Well... Most guilds out there don't have a roster, much less a website, this is something that Origin/EA implemented pretty early in the Ultima Online days to ease everyone's life. I guess those using wowroster will keep using wowroster since it's doubtful Blizzard will implement all functionalities on their armory site.

Would definitely be great to have an XML feed though :)

not bad..has some advantages but also some stuff i would miss comparing it to wowroster

pros:
- you dont have to chase your guildies to upload their char
- data always acurate (well 24h update margin stated by blizzard)

cons:
- you cant integrate it into your guilds website
- cant see details like recipies, bank, bags, quests

now if they just would provide the data as xml for each char and the guilds
that would be perfect

Blizzard's Repsonse to Rosters

I'm curious to see what it will be in the end.
And I'm even more curious to know what the devs of WoWRoster think about this.
I love my Roster, but I think we all have the same probs about "chasing guildies".
Anyway, I stay faithfull to the guys who invented it, not the ones who revamped it (talking about Blizzard here)

I'm with Carasak. Our guild uses our Roster more for Made By data and Guild Banking than "Ooo, what's <guildie> wearing when he logged today?"

it would be great if blizzard would honor us by providing the data feed to our rosters, that would be great (if it includes everything cp/gp gets)

Try contacting them maybe? On the official boards at least if you don't have insider contacts?

Blizzard's Repsonse to Rosters

Postby PleegWat » Thu Mar 01, 2007 1:32 pm

This morning (~4 hours ago) I took a look at that too. It runs completely on javascript, with a couple of xml feeds. I've confirmed there is no referrer checking on those feeds, so we can use them to pull roster data.

We're definitely gonna use that in R2. I'll see what I can do in an addon for roster 1x.

Like an admin option for pulling data of members that have not updated in the last week.
